Yawata no yabushirazu, Japan

Yawata no yabushirazu is a small patch of forest located Ichikawa city of the Chiba prefecture. While the place itself might seem harmless at first glance, it would surely get your attention as the forest seems out of place between the tall buildings.

Namazu-tron

The forest is famous all over the country as a forbidden forest. People are forbidden to even set foot inside the forest and it has been fenced by a stone wall to prevent people from entering inside the forest. While Aokigahara takes all the limelight of being the most haunted forest in Japan, people who know stories about this forest regard this as an equally haunted place. The name is described as a maze-like thicket without any end or exit. This however does not mean that the forest is so large that you can get lost, the forest is literally a small patch and it is impossible to get lost inside the forest but it is believed that whoever sets foot inside the forest their soul gets spirited away and they can never return from there as it is a sacred place and those who dare enter the forest will face the divine wrath.

Shinmaebashi

This theory can’t be put to the test now as nobody is allowed to enter the forest or maybe we don’t even know people might have entered the forest but they didn’t survive to tell the tale. This legend has been passed down since the Edo period and people still firmly believe in this. People often dare themselves to go inside the forest but there isn’t a single report of anyone going inside the forest and coming out alive.

Some people blame this supernatural activity on a fox spirit-deity, while some claim that the forest is haunted by the vengeful ghost of some ancient samurai lord who was killed at this place. Some people even believe that there is a poisonous gas inside the forest responsible for this.

しんぎんぐきゃっと

Although you cannot enter the forest, a shrine has been dedicated to the gates of the forest and one can stop to pray on the gates. Japan is a curious country with many legends and this perfect blend of the present without damaging anything from its past is what makes japan one of the best countries.

The Qiu Mansion, Shanghai

The Qiu brothers,Qiu Xingshan and Qiu Weiqing moved to Shanghai as migrant workers. The world was ravaged due to wars and people had to work day and night for food. Both the brothers worked under a German businessman. As the war went on, the German had to flee china leaving all of his assets behind in the care of the Qiu brothers.

The cost of paint was soaring during that time, the brothers started paint business and became a millionaire overnight. They built two majestic identical mansions with big gardens for each of them. The gardens were a sort of sanctuary on their own having all kinds of wild animals roaming around. There was a tiger, a crocodile in the pond, hundreds of birds that flew up in the sky during noon obscuring the sky. There were all kinds of exotic animals and birds that roamed around in the enchanted garden.

But the days of luxuries were short lived. It seemed that just like a cursed vessel from which you can get whatever you wish for albeit you will have to pay heavily for those wishes, the Qiu brothers were granted those luxuries but they had to pay with something neither they or anyone else could have imagined. The Qiu brothers vanished in thin air leaving their mansions to rot. Whether it was a vessel or the place on which they built the mansion was cursed, we would never know for sure. The animals were either sold off or were eaten by the people of the city when there was a widespread famine and people had nothing to eat.

Later one of the mansions was torn down and the other one was set to be moved to a different location clearing the space for some other new buildings in the growing city of Shanghai. It’s the cycle where old things no matter how great and majestic they once were are replaced with new things, the old always have to make way for new.

Here outside the Qiu mansion, the labourers were working on moving the mansion along with its foundations, but the story of the house was yet to end and something really weird happened. All the workers were rushed to the hospital because they were bitten and chased by animals that they had never seen in their life before. Nobody could work out anything about those animals that can give those sort of bite marks. A search of the whole mansion and its grounds were conducted by authorities but there was not a single trace of any living thing inside the house let alone the animals. The workers refused to work there.

There was a hotel adjancent to the abandoned mansion. The staff claimed that they would often witness mysterious animals wandering in the garden during their night shifts and some of the staff have even claimed to have been chased by these animals. A lady who lived near the site of the mansion even claimed to have seen a dragon-like creature in the garden. While the mansion and the area surrounding it is shrouded by mystery, the mansion was moved in 2010 to a new location where it stays abandoned to this day but people who visit there still claim to witness some sort of paranormal activity.

I grew up pretty close to this small town whose name means “fragrant water” in my local language. How did that come to be, you say? Well well well I’m glad you asked.

Apparently long long ago there’s a king who’s suspicious of his wife. He’s all like gurl you’re cheating, you gotta be! And the queen was like nooooo I’m not! I swear! But the king was not convinced, and kept accusing her. Eventually he decided that the queen is to be sentenced to death. Exasperated, the queen said: “fine, kill me. But then throw my body into this water right here and if I’m innocent the water will become fragrant,”.

The king was like LOL yea right, go die now. /stab

Well, she died. But they humored her and threw her body into the, uh… river or lake or whatever. It’s a body of water. Anyway, lo and behold, a strong flower fragrant starts wafting in the air, just as the queen said it would if she was innocent. The king fell to his knees, probably waving his fists to the clouds yelling a dramatic No0o0oo0000!!!

And then they named the town Fragrant Water. After this legend of a lady who died of shittyhusbanditis, an extremely common disease back in the day. I’ll let yall decide what message / lesson they’re trying to convey by naming their town after this legend. Think before you stab your wives, I guess?

Johnny Appleseed is a trip.

He wandered around planting apple seeds and the story talks about how he fed westward expansion.

Except… apples from seeds? You’re almost certainly not going to get an edible apple. You can make fermented hard apple cider from them, though…

He didn’t feed expansion, he boozed it up. And this is a children’s story!

The little town I lived in has a child’s grave in the older part of the cemetery. It is the only grave in the entire town that has a spiked fence and stones on top of where the body would be. It sticks out when you walk through the cemetery. Further, there is about 6-10 feet where there are no other graves, not the parents, no other kids or relatives. Local teens started circulating a myth that the child was born to a witch who was subsequently murdered after birthing the child. The myth goes that when the child died, they put spikes and stones on the grave to stop the child from rising and killing the towns people as the child would have been a witch as well. This myth circulated so widely that the cemetery put up a little board on the grave saying that the extras on the grave were to prevent animals from digging up the body. It didn’t make as much sense to the town teens as it’s was the only grave in town with those safety measures. People, mostly teens, still to this day go give gifts to the lonely child, lovingly refered to as the Witch Baby, from coins to stuffed animals and flowers.

In 1967, the then Prime Minister of Australia, Harold Holt, swam out to sea and was swept away. It was said that he was caught in a ‘rip’, and dragged out by the current. One of the biggest search operations took place in order to locate him, but was unsuccessful.

His body has never been found, and this has generated a whole bunch of theories. But yeah, pretty weird.

Mcpike Mansion, Illinois.

Alton is an old small city in Madison County, Illinois. Alton was a home to native Americans for hundreds of years before the 19th century after which European Americans started settling in the city.

Greg Linscott

For a small town, Alton has seen a lot of deaths due to its long unreported history. About 1400 confederate soldiers died during the civil war because of smallpox outbreak and many unreported deaths later Alton became one of the most haunted cities in the whole country.

Blackdoll

The whole town is haunted but there are some locations that really stand out. One such location is the Mcpike mansion. Famous all over the country for its 11 or so ghost residents. The house was built between 1869 and 1871 on the highest point in Alton. Henry Mcgike a prominent member of the society and the Three time Mayor of the town moved into the house along with his family. They lived at the house till 1936 but the house was sold to Paul Laichinger who lived at the house till 1951. The house remained abandoned for years and fell in decay during those years due to vandalism. In 1994 Sharon and George Luedke bought the house in order to convert it into a hotel but they could not do so as they were unable to acquire any grant money for that purpose. But even with all those hindrances they managed to complete the renovations of the house through donations and opened the home for tours instead. They still host several ghost tours as well as historical tours. Although renovations around the house are still going on.

Aaron & Mariona

During the earlier renovations the first paranormal activity took place. Sharon was working on the garden one day and she saw a man staring at her from the second floor window. Later after doing some research about the house she found a picture of Paul Laichinger and quickly realized that it was the same person that she saw on the window.

Another spirit that has been spotted inside the house is believed to be Sarah. She used to be a servant in the house and is now a friendly ghost. Sharon often spots her inside the house and she doesn’t feel scared around her. Her spirit roams around in the attic.

Mcpikemansioncrew

The wine cellar is the most active place in the house. People hear footsteps and witness shadows and apparitions infront of their eyes. Often people feel sick around in the cellar although that might be due to the fact that people only visit the cellar during tours and it might get really congested during those tours. People have seen shadowy mist form in the cellar and follow them around. The heavy metal gate at the end of stairs usually takes a little bit of strength to open and close but people have seen it open on its own.

Other ghosts residing in the house include that of Mrs and Mr Mcpike and people have heard voices and footsteps of small children in the house, infact when Paul Laichinger used to live in the house and rented some of the rooms, his tenants often complained about hearing kids playing inside the house even when there were no kids present. The child spirits are believed to be the kids of Mcpikes who died young.

Up till now no one has ever witnessed any sort of evil entity inside the house. All the ghosts are friendly and welcoming.

The house is still under repair but people can still book tours and visit the house.

Napier Prison, New Zealand

Napier Prison is a former prison in New Zealand. It was built in 1862 and housed both male and female prisoners. Although not as violent as other prisons might be, it was still one of the most violent prisons by New Zealand standards. The prison has witnessed a lot of murders, deaths and suicides. The prison had also seen at least four hangings during its operation. Later the prison was also used as an orphanage as well as a psychiatric unit.

Pseudopanax

The prison was decommissioned in 1992 but was opened 10 years later as a backpackers hostel offering cheap stays to people. Although it acted as a hostel for a short period of time, it was during that time when people started experiencing paranormal activities inside the oldest prison.

Julie

People staying there would hear footsteps, disembodied voices, doors opening and closing on their own and a supposedly evil entity of a former prisoner and a serial killer Roland Edwards. It is reported that the paranormal activity intensifies on the day of his death. Places that witness deaths and psychologically tormented people often develop a sort of negative atmosphere.

Robyn Gallagher( Napier and Bay)

The prison now acts as a tourist attraction providing guided and unguided tours to the people interested. People can also see the path of the 1931 Hawkes bay earthquake which is one of the deadliest natural disasters in the country. The prison also hosts escape room experiences.

Al- Jazirah Al- Hamra (U.A.E.)

Al- Jazirah Al- Hamra Is a ghost town to the south of the city of Ras Alla Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates. The town became abandoned during the 1930s when the business of pearl hunting became depleted and the inhabitants moved to some other place in search for new ways of income.

Alexandermcnabb

The town is considered to be a hotspot for djinn activity. There have been reports of strange noises, chilling screams/wails and many unexplainable sightings.

Sanjana Biju

It is believed that once the sun sets, the town comes to life with plenty of unexplainable noises that are not of this world. That is one of the main reasons that people choose to stay away from this place especially at night. Djinns can shapeshift and can appear/disappear at their will. Some locals that still live near the town believe that people who visit the village in the hope of a paranormal encounter are just wasting their time because djinns can only be spotted when they want to be seen.

Clémence Jacqueri

There are also other spirits in the town. Those spirits are said to never cause any harm to people except frightening them just for fun. Haunted sites include ‘the haunted Mansion of Al Dhait and Dhaga graveyard in Ras al khaimah. Thrill seekers have become regular visitors in the town. New Al Jazirah Al Hamra was built near the old town in 1980 and some of the locals live there. People living there are still reluctant to talk about the supernatural occurences.

The Whaley house, San Diego

The Whaley house was a residential location of the Whaley family. Thomas Whaley himself designed the two story Greek revival house and even the bricks used in building the house were created in Thomas whaley’s own brickyard. The house was completed in 1857 and it was the finest home in San Diego during that time.

Roman Eugeniusz

Besides being the Whaley family home, it was also San Diego’s first commercial theater, the second county courthouse, and a bilingual general store. The San Diego County government was also renting a part of the house for its offices.

Library of Congress, Prints & Photographs Division, HABS CAL,37-OLTO,5–7

While the house was in itself one of the most magnificent homes during that time and is still a national treasure to this day, the house brought a lot of bad luck to the Whaley family. The part of the house that acted as a general Store caught fire and was burnt down leaving the family in shambles. The first son died of illness when he was 18 months old and his daughter committed suicide later on in the life. Due to the suicide there was a massive scandal and the engagement of his other daughter was broken off by her fiance. All of these things forced him to move his family to a different house. During their stay away from home the house fell into a state of decay. After almost 3 decades and after Thomas Whaley had passed away his son Francis started restoration work and turned the house into a tourist attraction and a museum.

(Whaley house rear) Library of Congress, Prints and Photograph Division HABS: HABS CAL,37-OLTO,5–3

Even during their stay in the house, the Whaley family had reported on paranormal activity taking place inside the house. They believed that they saw the ghost of a thief who was hanged within the property. They would hear footsteps inside the house and even those watching the house from the outside claimed to have seen shadows moving inside the house at night. The house was also said to have been built on an old cemetery.

(Courthouse ) Library of Congress, Prints and Photograph Division HABS: HABS CAL,37-OLTO,5–6

Today the house acts as a museum and people can still take a tour. Those who have visited the house claimed to have felt the presence of an angry entity that is believed to be of the thief that was hanged at the property before the house was built. People feel sadness and despair inside the house. Other entities include the ghost of a toddler whose crying, giggling and small footsteps can be heard within the house from a distance. This entity is believed to be of Thomas Jr. The spirits of violet and Anna Whaley have also been spotted in misty form accompanied by the smell of their perfume. Thomas Whaley is sometimes seen standing on top of the stairs watching the house.

( Living room ) Library of Congress, Prints and Photograph Division HABS: HABS CAL,37-OLTO,5–5

People have witnessed things moving inside the house on their own. Lights turn on and off and even a very nasty smell that is associated with an evil entity.

The Whaley house provides both guided and unguided tours of the house and the museum. It has also featured on several tv shows like ghost adventures and holzer files.

Makcik keropok. Its a legend about a lady going around door to door selling keropok. (a type of cracker) If you refuse to buy any, she releases a Pontianak (a vengeful ghost) into your house. Best solution is not to open the door.

there used to be an insane asylum by my house in the 70s. It is probably five minutes away from my house if that. But, they tore it down in the 90s because it was just a giant eye sore, and had a dark history of mistreating patients. There is a cemetery on the property with hundreds of unnamed people who died there.

In the early 2000s, Walmart bought the land and wanted to build a walmart there since you would be able to see it from the highway. They excavated and such, and the day before they were set to start construction a huge landslide happened in the middle of the night that blocked the high way for days. If it would have happened at rush hour tons of people would have died.

Ultimately, it was deemed unsafe territory to build on, so it remains empty. Except for all the bike trails through the area. But no one ever rides during night time lol. I guess the people who died there didn’t want to be chilling underneath a walmart’s aisle 10.

We have a chair that’s been untouched since the 1960s in our schools boiler room. The janitor swears that a boy got locked down there by these other kids the day before summer break and died from the heat. He claims that the chair moves and that the door handle moves like he’s still there trying to get out.

its not really a known creepy urban legend, but in the 1800s in the owyhee mountains in idaho there was a group of hunters staying in a cabin and after failing to come back to their families a search party was sent out to look for them, they found the cabin, locked from the inside, with the window also locked from the inside. and they found all of the hunters dead with their heads crushed. no one knows who did it or how. but the incident repeated itself in like the 1970s or something.

Black Shucks; big, black, ghostly/demonic dogs with glowing red eyes that are supposed to be omens of death. They generally appear on roads at night. There’s apparently a few around town and some drag chains too. Also one is actually a bear, but I have no idea why we have a ghostly demonic bear because we don’t even have normal bears in this country.

r/mikeynbn

I live in Romania and as a kid the most common legend was the “black ambulance” that would steal kids and harvest their organs and that kids’ bodies were to be found a few days later abandoned on a field with some money for the funeral. Also, in my town our parents would never let us go to the cinema because there was this legend about a man who wound put AIDS infected needles on the seats.

We have 3 mysterious men in a car called The Gaurdians (yes that’s what we call them) along Montana highway 464.
People have told experiences where they have car trouble and three men in a car drive up and help them out. Other people talk about headlights that disappear in places where they shouldn’t disappear. We also have a Native American in a jean jacket and jeans who materializes in front of cars before they can swerve out of the way. When the driver checks for a victim, no body is found.

We have little people (like 6in tall) that live in our forests. They stay well hidden unless you’re all by yourself and vulnerable, then they like to mess with you for fun.

Not really creepy, but there’s one house in my hometown that is said to be haunted. There’s a tray with a golden teapot on it, and the tray has scratch marks on it. That tray has been sitting in the same location for years, remaining completely untouched, and still, to this day no one has touched it. Some of my friends insist that it’s haunted. There’s also an urban legend abut how an electrician (or someone with a similar job) fell off ofa ladder while setting up one of the light in the middle school gym. His ghost is said to haunt the gym at night whenever the lights are turned

Carl beck house (Canada)

This house was built in the 1800s in Ontario, Canada. Carl beck, along with his nine children and wife lived in the house. He was a lumber magnate and the owner Beck industries. According to the reports, two of his children died at a young age in the house and his wife also passed really soon as a result all the responsibility of the children came on the eldest daughter.

The eldest daughter, “Mary ” had to look after the other children all the time. After some time, she had a fight with her father because she wanted to marry a guy and Carl beck did not agree on that, he did not find the guy fit to marry his daughter. Mary ran away from home. Before Carl beck died he divided the property equally amongst all of his children except for Mary who only got one dollar.

The house is now available for people to book for staying at nights. People who have stayed there have claimed of seeing an apparition of a man in a suit and other apparitions that are believed to be of Carl beck and his daughters. There have been multiple reports of objects moving on their own and lights turn on and off for apparently no reason. Some people have encountered an angry spirit that they believe to be of eldest daughter, Mary. There have been sightings of the spirits outside on the road too. The house is listed as a haunted house on airbnb and those who want to experience a chilling night can stay there.

Redditors describe a very interesting or odd psychological phenomena or fact?

The truth is that our brain works in mysterious ways and experts still have a lot to figure out about our brain. There are many psychological phenomena that we have some kind of knowledge about and yet new facts and odd things are discovered on a daily basis. We encounter a lot of things on our day to day activities that leave us completely perplexed. Redditors share their knowledge about some of those weird occurrences that can be attributed to a psychological phenomena.

Your brain kind of defrags irrelevant information. If you go on a long, uneventful drive, you might only remember the first and last ten minutes (or something unusual in between), but your brain deems it pointless.

The Frequency Illusion/Baader-Meinhof phenomenon.

The frequency illusion is when you start noticing something for the first time and suddenly it appears that this something suddenly crops up everywhere. In reality this is not true. A good example is a (not currently trending) word you heard for the first time. Suddenly you read and hear this word all the time.

r/Satures

I had a customer who “knew” that her entire family had been replaced by actors. Those had gone through extensive surgery and training to mimic their body language, way of speaking and such while all memories of the relative they replaced had been transferred to them with a chip in the arm. She told me she was a nurse and had witnessed this in other cases. “It’s really crazy! This actor lives in the house of your relative, looks like him, speaks like him, knows everything that happened 20 years ago. But this isn’t your relative!”

She was 100% convinced of this, not the smallest doubt. Her main concern was what happened to her real family. Only years later I learnt this is called Capgras delusion. I hope she got help, and that she could ‘reunite’ with her family.

placebo effect is the one that is the strangest to me. it’s so wild, like fake thing that causes a real effect. what’s even more wild is the placebo effect works on animals, AND it works on humans when you TELL them they’re getting a placebo and show them it’s a placebo. it’s so weird.

I don’t recall the scientific term with any certainty, but Doorway Syndrome.

Basically, you think of one thing, then walk through a doorway, and it’s gone, filed away into matters relevant to the room you just left. This is why you often forget why you just walked into the kitchen.
