Origins and Legend:

The legend of the Wendigo originates from the beliefs and stories of various Algonquian-speaking tribes, including the Ojibwe, Cree, and Innu peoples. According to the lore, the Wendigo is a malevolent spirit or creature associated with winter, famine, and cannibalism. It is said to be born from the darkest recesses of human desperation and the consuming hunger for survival.

Characteristics and Appearance:

Described as a gaunt and emaciated creature, the Wendigo is often depicted as towering in height with elongated limbs and a skeletal frame. Its skin is pale and stretched tautly over its bones, while its eyes glow with a fierce and ravenous hunger. The Wendigo is often associated with the frigid winter wilderness, lurking in the forests and preying upon unsuspecting individuals who venture too close.

Insatiable Hunger and Cannibalistic Nature:

The most prominent characteristic of the Wendigo is its insatiable appetite for human flesh. In legend, it is believed that those who resort to cannibalism in desperate times invite the transformation into a Wendigo, forever cursed with an unquenchable hunger. The creature is said to possess an endless craving for human flesh, driving it to hunt and devour its victims relentlessly.

Symbolism and Cultural Significance:

Beyond its terrifying nature, the Wendigo holds deep symbolic meaning within indigenous cultures. It represents the consequences of greed, excess, and the imbalance between humanity and nature. The Wendigo serves as a cautionary tale, reminding individuals of the dangers of succumbing to their darkest desires and losing touch with their own humanity.

This one is a bit more personal to me, but growing up my mom and I always made an effort to go to the beach every Friday afternoon.

When it got too dark to be in the water, we would make our way to the park that was right next to the beach.

On some Fridays, we would just chill on one of the slides and look at the stars. One day I saw this light spinning around and remember asking my mom what it was.

She told me that it was a lighthouse, and that it’s used at night to stop ships from crashing into the shore.

I remember this vividly because it was kind of like my gateway into hyperfixating on sunken and shipwrecked ships.

Years later, over a decade (so this was probably in the mid to late 2000s), got back into lighthouses. I go online to see if this lighthouse that saw was still in commission, and I can’t find any traces of it.

So I ask my mom, and apparently this conversation we had never took place according to her. I insist, and finally she’s like “idk babes, probably forgot”

So I go looking deeper, and apparently there was never a lighthouse where thought it was.

To this day it fucks me up, because I KNOW what I saw, I KNOW what we talked about.

I don’t know if it counts, but I had a favorite orange t-shirt and I haven’t seen it in years. Asked my mom if she knows anything about it and described the drawings on it. She went “You mean the turquoise one? It’s in x drawer” I fought her a while about it and finally went to check the said drawer and there it was, my favorite “orange” shirt in all its turquoise glory

Honestly not even the famous ones, more like shit in my town changing. Small stuff, but infuriating.

For example, near one of the shops where me and my brother would go for walks were these weird pillars, the small kind you’d put up to prevent cars from driving through. Well there’d be days where they’re not there and no one I ask remembers them being there. Then there are days when they’re there and when I ask about them I get the whole “they’ve always been there.”

It’s one of the few MEs I’ve experienced in this town.

Not me, but a few other folks

I’m an amateur astronomer, and the book in our astronomy club library that causes the most controversy is one about bright comets of the last few decades

A comet bright enough to see from the city happens about once a decade on average. And a lot of people saw one in the sky when they were kids or in their teens, and then years later they ask about it. And so the book comes out and they look through it and check the year and go ‘that’s not right’. Because they remember seeing the comet when they were in middle school, when in reality it was when they were in high school, or vice versa.

The one that always gets me is particular to my friends and I from when we were kids. There was a creek that ran under the street in the neighborhood and we would sometimes hang out in the banks on either side of the road. There was this big rock that we would sit on all the time. Except one day we were walking by and it wasn’t a rock. It was a small tree. Fully rooted in and established and the rock was no where to be seen. Mind you, it was an extremely heavy boulder. We passed that spot all the time and all of us remember that rock. We call it the shapeshifting rock.

Ok ok hear me out.

First of all: in Brazil you tipically don’t go to school (middle school or high school, doesn’t matter) for the whole day. You are in school either in the morning (usually 7.30 am to noon) or in the afternoon (usually 1pm to 5.30pm).

Every single person who was a kid in Brazil (and was not ir school in the mornings) when 9/11 happened remembers watching Dragon Ball Z and having it be interrupted for the breaking news of the attacks. And I mean EVERYONE. It comes up every time someone asks “what were you doing when 9/11 happened”.

Except DBZ wasn’t on at that time. Someone checked the airing times and compared to the time when the attacks happened. Definitely not on.

Still, a whole generation of kids is 100% sure they were watching DBZ when the news broke out.

edit: wow this blew up etc etc. also holy fuck everyone saying that this isn’t real and they edited the timetables after the fact. You sound like conspiracy theorists. Look up Occam’s Razor. This has been thoroughly discussed by Brazilians on the internet. It’s not something new. Someone else said it in this thread: the tv show that played DBZ wasn’t even aired on that day.

Jerome Grand Hotel, Arizona

HISTORY

The Jerome Grand hotel was built as “United Verde hospital” in 1926. It was built by “united Verde copper company” which was a mining company when they started their business in the area and felt the need for a hospital which although would be the 4th hospital in the state but with the best of facilities. Many modern equipment were available at the hospital and it was considered one of the most modern hospitals not only in the state but all over the Country. The Otis elevator in the building was first of its kind and it still functions to this day.

The hospital operated till 1950 when residents had already moved to different cities due to non availability of work and hazardous living conditions. After 1950 the hospital would lay abandoned for 44 years and the equipment, furniture and everything else inside stayed in the hospital like something frozen in time.

RENOVATIONS AND REOPENING

Finetooth

The hospital was acquired in 1994 by Larry Altherr from Phelps Dodge Mining Corporation who started the renovations and the Jerome Grand hotel opened for business in 1996.

Gillfoto

Even though the hospital was one of the most modern hospitals of that era, many people died when the hospital was in Operation. The figure is assumed to be close to 9000. The hospital was cursed with many unfortunate accidents the first of which was the mining disaster that blew a part of the hospital when it was first opened. Seeing that so many people had died in the hospital one can guess that it is difficult to name all of the diseased people but one of the few suspicious deaths that happened and is still talked about is that of the maintenance man Claude Harvey. He was pinned down by the elevator and everybody thought of it as an accident but it was later revealed during an autopsy that he had already died before being crushed by the elevator. Another death was that of a caretaker hired during the 1970s to protect the building from vandals. He committed suicide and was found hanging inside the hotel.

PARANORMAL ACTIVITIES

When the hotel had just opened and only a few rooms were available, guests staying there would report off all kinds of mysterious activity and they still do to this day. So many spirits are said to haunt the hotel that it is believed that sometimes more ghosts roam the hotel than there are humans present at the hotel.

  • Ghost children
Seeks ghosts

Guests would hear strange sounds and voices coming from closed rooms. Guests also reported smells coming from rooms, such as flowers, dust, cigar smoke, and whiskey. The most common apparition is of a child who is seen running up and down the hallways of the third floor which is said to be the most active floor. Guests would also hear children playing, giggling and even seeing the ghostly apparition of a child at the foot of their beds during nights just looking at them before disappearing in thin air. A lot of guests would hear a baby crying and would report it to the front desk only to find that the sound was coming from an empty room.

  • Poltergeist activity
(an original photo shared by a guest) Cultureu

Poltergeist activity like the television and bedside lamps being unplugged and things sent flying in the room. Things missing only to be found later under the beds are some of the most common things that guests experience on a daily basis in their hotel rooms.

  • The maintenance man

The spirit of Claude Harvey, the maintenance man who died in the hotel is seen many times in the laundry or the boiler room doing his chores as though still at work. People believe that he doesn’t realise that he is dead.

  • Ghost Pet

Another famous apparition is that of a ghostly cat. The cat has been heard meowing, hissing and scratching at doors and walls. Both staff and guests have heard and felt the cat brushing against their legs and snuggling against them while on the bed. People could see the imprint of a cat on their bed. A guest even provided a photo evidence of the ghost cat spirit sitting on the table. This is only a small amount of paranormal activity that occurs at the hotel.

PRESENT DAY

The Asylum Ann Larie Valentine

The hotel has such an abundance of paranormal activity that many paranormal explorers visit the hotel and they easily get in touch with the paranormal. The hotel does not provide any guided tours but those who want to experience any sort of paranormal activity have to book a room like other guests and only then they can get access to the hallways of the hotel and that is without bothering any other guests. The lobby and the hotel restaurant called “Asylum” are open to the public.

Police, security guards, paramedics describe how they have been called out only to realise it was a seemingly paranormal incident.

I was a caregiver in a retirement home for 6 months at the beginning of the pandemic. We had one patient, let’s call them Robert, that was mute so when they called us because they needed something, of course we would just hang up and go to their rooms. I had been on vacation for a week and my coworkers and I didn’t had the chance to go over what had happened while was away. We had 24 patients for 2 caregiver so we would split the unit in half, 12 residents for each caregiver and we would help the other if needed. So, the first shift after my vacation, I was taking care of Robert’s unit. Few minutes after I arrived, I got a call from Robert’s room. So, hang up, finish with my current patient and calmy walk to the room. When I arrived, the door was locked which was really unusual since Robert usually leaves the door open. I knock, unlock the door and open it. To my surprise, the room was pitch black except the television that was turned on. It took me a few minutes to realize that Robert’s wasn’t in the room. So, I called my coworker and asked “Have you seen Robert’s?” And that’s when they told me ” Oh… Yeah… Hum… He passed away 2 days ago “. Alright, weird but not the first time that our system glitches like that and we get a phone call an empty room. go on with my shift, like nothing happened. I had left the door open. When I was helping another patient walk to the kitchen, when we passed Robert’s room, they said ” Hi Robert, thought you were at the hospital. Welcome back “. I was 100% convinced that the room was hunted now. We would get a call from that room a few times a week until Robert’s was buried and after that, nothing else happened in that room. We’ve also had another patient calling us because there was Mike sitting in his chair every night. Mike was the name of the patient that passed away in that room. They had never met.

Marine stationed in Japan back in 2010-12.

I was military police. One night around 2-3 am we hear over the radio “uhhhh. Any units seeing the light over the water south?” It was a marine air station based on the southern tip of Japan. We had no flights coming in or going out that night. Everyone knew there shouldn’t be a light flying over the waters.

So about 3 patrol cars met up at the air field where there was a way better view. Sure as shit there’s a light sitting out over the water blinking slowly off and on. Some guys tried to say it was a star, so we had traffic control cameras from dispatch zoom in on it. Turns out it was slowly moving out of the cameras. So while by ehe we couldn’t tell it was moving, the cameras picked it up. We sat there kind of amazed for an hour before it went away.

As we were getting back into the squad car took a last look at the night sky and saw a small light dart behind some clouds in a movement that didn’t make sense. I didn’t tel the other guys, just thought there’s no way they would believe me.

Months later I was running on the sea wall and stopped to lay down and catch my breath. Again saw a light, watched it drive into some clouds and then disappear. That was around the time of the tsunami and Fukushima. Super weird.

Two secondhand stories from my friend who used to be a security guard in the federal building in Portland OR:

One night she saw what looked like someone in a dark hoodie standing by an office door at the far end of a long hallway. When she called out the person turned to face her, but she couldn’t see a face in the hood. Then it “zoomed” at her, covering the full length of the corridor in about a second, sort of swooshed past her and disappeared. She was standing at the end of the hall with a non-openable window behind her in the building without even locking up, drove home and called in from his bed. He refused to talk about it.

Among their employees this building had a reputation for weird noises and sightings.

I got called to persistent fire alarms being set off in a block of flats that used to be a poor house in the 1800’s. The alarms would go off 3-4 times a night at certain times of the year. We arrive and residents are all outside saying they could hear a woman crying, no one wanted to go in as they assumed it was her that was setting the alarms off and she might be crazy. We went up, yup sure enough could hear a woman crying, sounded like the stairwell.. up We went and walked, crying get louder, turn the landing and realised the sound was then below us. It was coming from the top step of the previous flight of stairs. Well I nearly shat myself… what made it worse was guess who has just bought a flat on the ground floor and was moving in the following week.. yup me. I used to bail through the front doors, past the staircase and into my flat like I was being chased by wolves.

My sister has been a nurse for about 8 years in Southern and now Northern California. Worked in hospitals (med surge, tele, icu), dialysis centers, and now a hospice nurse. She has a few stories from the hospital, things like children laughing, shadows, patients claiming they saw another dead patient when they had never met. One of the creepiest that she and the other nurses told me was about a patient complaining and scared that something was under their bed. He was older and confused so they didn’t think much of it. Checked on him, responded to the multiple calls, and just tried to make him feel better. The next day, a new patient went into that room, another older person but not confused, and called to complain about something under his bed. They sort of brushed it off again after checking. The next night, a new patient in his 20s and completely coherent called crying that something kept running under his bed. They checked and found nothing but the patient was in such distress and shaking, they moved him. Happened quite a few other times as well.

They never found anything but that was so creepy to me.

Not sure if this is paranormal or not, but we live together now and she works as a hospice nurse. Every so often, she would scream or id hear her struggle or make weird noises in the middle of the night. I’d go to check and she’d tell me it was sleep paralysis. And explain what happened, that she saw a specific patient in her episode standing over her and growling, crying, or screaming. Always a very scary dream. The next day, that patient would die. Happened about 13 times so far. Trips me out!

r/seductive_hades

My coworker used to be a security guard for the Forensic Mental Health unit nearby, it used to be a mental asylum and was renowned for treating its patients horribly, there’s a grave yard nearby with over 200 unmarked graves for bodies they exhumed on the old asylum grounds. A lot of people would try to sneak into the old abounded buildings and my coworker and his partner would get deployed to tell them to piss off or to check it out to make sure no one was there and he said very regularly he would feel spirits, see unexplained movement and hear screaming, especially in the ‘treatment’ and intake rooms. Im not very spiritual but I totally believe him, that place has a lot of sad history behind it.

Graveyard shift security at a hotel/casino. We got called to the top floor of the hotel because people from the floor below were calling in noise complaints. I was the FNG so I had a trainer with me when we went up. Dispatch told us over the radio that there was nobody registered on that floor, so cool, just a few idiots being idiots. We got up there and every single door on the entire floor was wide open. Anyone who has been to these hotels knows that you can’t just accidentally leave the doors open because they close by themselves. They weren’t propped open or anything, just open. We asked Dispatch if engineering was doing any work up here or had anything going on during the day. After a few minutes they told us they called engineering and they said no. We just noped out at that point and said there was nobody up there.

Once worked in a call center very late at night. Around 8pm you’d hear all the doors in the main corridor slamming shut, but the doors didn’t open or close at all.

Later we tried to frighten one of the workers by telling them the place was haunted, and found out about a month later that the entire building was on top of a medieval plague pit, where they just build over it and left the corpses buried.

I work security at night in a luxury condo, I actually started a little over a month ago and I already had a fair share of incidents.

Alarms triggered for no apparent reason, finding unusual doors unlocked, random orbs on the cameras, doors slamming while nobody’s around, elevator phone started by itself.

The Qiu Mansion, Shanghai

The Qiu brothers,Qiu Xingshan and Qiu Weiqing moved to Shanghai as migrant workers. The world was ravaged due to wars and people had to work day and night for food. Both the brothers worked under a German businessman. As the war went on, the German had to flee china leaving all of his assets behind in the care of the Qiu brothers.

The cost of paint was soaring during that time, the brothers started paint business and became a millionaire overnight. They built two majestic identical mansions with big gardens for each of them. The gardens were a sort of sanctuary on their own having all kinds of wild animals roaming around. There was a tiger, a crocodile in the pond, hundreds of birds that flew up in the sky during noon obscuring the sky. There were all kinds of exotic animals and birds that roamed around in the enchanted garden.

Unsplash.com/Cosmic timetraveller

But the days of luxuries were short lived. It seemed that just like a cursed vessel from which you can get whatever you wish for albeit you will have to pay heavily for those wishes, the Qiu brothers were granted those luxuries but they had to pay with something neither they or anyone else could have imagined. The Qiu brothers vanished in thin air leaving their mansions to rot. Whether it was a vessel or the place on which they built the mansion was cursed, we would never know for sure. The animals were either sold off or were eaten by the people of the city when there was a widespread famine and people had nothing to eat.

Later one of the mansions was torn down and the other one was set to be moved to a different location clearing the space for some other new buildings in the growing city of Shanghai. It’s the cycle where old things no matter how great and majestic they once were are replaced with new things, the old always have to make way for new.

Here outside the Qiu mansion, the labourers were working on moving the mansion along with its foundations, but the story of the house was yet to end and something really weird happened. All the workers were rushed to the hospital because they were bitten and chased by animals that they had never seen in their life before. Nobody could work out anything about those animals that can give those sort of bite marks. A search of the whole mansion and its grounds were conducted by authorities but there was not a single trace of any living thing inside the house let alone the animals. The workers refused to work there.

There was a hotel adjancent to the abandoned mansion. The staff claimed that they would often witness mysterious animals wandering in the garden during their night shifts and some of the staff have even claimed to have been chased by these animals. A lady who lived near the site of the mansion even claimed to have seen a dragon-like creature in the garden. While the mansion and the area surrounding it is shrouded by mystery, the mansion was moved in 2010 to a new location where it stays abandoned to this day but people who visit there still claim to witness some sort of paranormal activity.

Carl beck house (Canada)

This house was built in the 1800s in Ontario, Canada. Carl beck, along with his nine children and wife lived in the house. He was a lumber magnate and the owner Beck industries. According to the reports, two of his children died at a young age in the house and his wife also passed really soon as a result all the responsibility of the children came on the eldest daughter.

The eldest daughter, “Mary ” had to look after the other children all the time. After some time, she had a fight with her father because she wanted to marry a guy and Carl beck did not agree on that, he did not find the guy fit to marry his daughter. Mary ran away from home. Before Carl beck died he divided the property equally amongst all of his children except for Mary who only got one dollar.

The house is now available for people to book for staying at nights. People who have stayed there have claimed of seeing an apparition of a man in a suit and other apparitions that are believed to be of Carl beck and his daughters. There have been multiple reports of objects moving on their own and lights turn on and off for apparently no reason. Some people have encountered an angry spirit that they believe to be of eldest daughter, Mary. There have been sightings of the spirits outside on the road too. The house is listed as a haunted house on airbnb and those who want to experience a chilling night can stay there.

Haunted houses- 50 Berkley square, London

50 Berkley square (London)
50 Berkley square located in Berkley square, Mayfair, Central London is reportedly one of the most haunted townhouses in London. People believed that the attic of the house was the most creepy place with a lot of occurences but a lot of people credited those occurences to the wierd owner who used to sleep during day and wake up at night. It is still believed that women kind of evil lurks within the walls of the house. There is a story of a man who moved into the house along with his teenage daughters. The elder daughter immediately started complaining of a strange musty smell that according to her was of animals in cages at the zoo.

Once the elder daughter’s fiance was due to visit so the housemaid was told to clean the upstairs room for him. As soon as she went up there, the family members heard a terrified scream. When they went to check, she was collapsed on the floor muttering “don’t let it touch me. Even after the incident the girl’s fiance decided to stay in the same room. He went upstairs and locked the room, 30 minutes later everyone heard him scream, followed by a gunshot. He was found dead, his face twisted in horror. There was another man who was skeptical. He told the other occupants before going to bed that at night if he were to ring the bell once, they should ignore it but if the rings the bell twice they should come to his aid. At midnight they heard the bell once and ignored it, soon after the bell started to ring furiously, they ran to his room to find him in absolute terror. He died shortly afterwards.

There are several legends relating to the house. It is believed that the attic of the house is haunted by the spirit of a young woman who committed suicide there. She is capable of frightening people to death. Another story is that the attic is haunted by a spirit of a little girl who was murdered there by a servant. In 1872, lord lyttleton stayed in the attic with his shotgun. At night he reportedly fired at the apparition. In the morning he could only find the cartridges. In 1887 it was alleged that two sailors from HMS Penelope stayed there. One of them was found dead and the other was driven insane.
Recently there has been no reports of any paranormal activity and a family lives there.
