Redditors describe real life instances of still working booby traps that have been set off at historical sites that may have killed or seriously injured archaeologists or their workers.

There was an Egyptian tomb where a corridor went downhill by about 60 feet, and then uphill again.

The engineers put dead animals and fresh plants etc in there before they sealed it up. And so the decline/ depression filled with CO2. It stayed like that for centuries. In modern times, when they unearthed the tomb, they found human skeletons centuries younger than the tomb, where people had died trying to get in.

Found this post by u/KnightIT in an old r/history archived thread:

The answer is, shockingly enough, yes; archaelogist have found booby traps in tombs all over the world meaning that they were not limited to a single culture either and with a little bit of researching you may find countless examples of traps set into tombs. Obviously we’re not talking of the “giant boulder of death that rolls along the path narrowly avoiding killing you” type of traps but according to certain professor Qin Shi Huang fitted his tomb with automatic crossbow very similar to the one we see in “The Mummy tomb of the Dragon Emperor”

Here’s an article to begin your research, have fun discovering how clever (and cruel) our ancestors were http://amidtheruins.com/top-10-real-life-trapped-tombs -temples-and-treasures/

Valley of the kings has a stair well in one of the tombs where they purposely made the stairwell steep and purposely made steps at odd heights to throw someone’s balance off allowing them to tumble down the stair well and at the bottom is a deep put so they break a limb and are stuck with no way out.

I saw a YouTube video many years ago that I haven’t been able to find since and the details are murky, but I remember the gist of it was that there was a tunnel system under a German city that the Nazis used to stash some of their gold (allegedly). It was mentioned that these tunnels were likely boobytrapped and the German government didn’t want archaeologists messing with a site that was likely wired with bombs in an actual city. I’ve tried to find it again, but all that comes up is the Nazi gold train craze that wound up yielding nothing.

not a booby trap but, in Tutankhamun’s tomb, when it was first actually opened and Howard Carter put his head inside, the entire place had vases with perfectly dried and preserved flowers and reeds… that, as soon as the relatively hot and moist air outside blew in, completely disintegrated.

While not likely intentionally a booby trap, the use of mercury in the mausoleum of the first emperor of China would’ve been particularly toxic.

Sort of similar but not really, a lot of “cursed objects” that have been uncovered throughout history we’re really just carrying deadly mold or bacteria that killed the people who took possession of the objects.

Off the top of my head, know some tombs in South America have cinnabar sprinkled in them. No clue anyone has died from it though

Edit: TIL y’all are reading this as Cinnabon and not mercury sulfide crystals

I can’t think of any traps but archaeologists getting killed or injured on site is not as uncommon as it should be. Personally, I was temporarily blinded on my last dig before leaving the field.

We also have a lot of fun stories too. If you find an archaeologist, buy them a drink and you’ll have a lot of fun.

The Cheltenham Ghost (Real woman in Black? )

The morton ghost later known as the cheltenham ghost was an apparition said to haunt a house in cheltenham, Western England.

The sightings started occurring during 1882 in the Despard family, who lived there at that time. The daughter was first to encounter the spirit. She had heard someone at the door, when she went to check, she found nobody there. While returning she saw the figure of a tall lady dressed in black, standing at the top of the stairs. The figure began to descend the stairs but vanished in thin air.

Most of the sightings occurred between 1882 and 1886 after which the sightings became uncommon. At the time when the sightings were frequent at least seven people saw the apparition while many others heard unexplainable noises.

The eldest daughter “Rose” saw the figure many times and described it in detail in her diary. Other sisters also saw the apparition but at different times and only when they were alone. The ghost would never show up in front of more than one person at a time. Once all four sisters saw the figure in quick succession separately on the route from the drawing room to the orchard. The father could never see the apparition even if it was standing beside him. In total 17 people saw the apparition and each and everyone of them claimed that they mistook it for a living person as it was not like a transparent figure but a solid lifelike being.

Thales Rodrigues de Miranda

The society for physical research investigation did a research about the history if the house and found out that the ghost was a housewife that used to live there in 1860. Nobody knows what happened to her and she became an apparition. Years later the house was turned into a boarding school and there were stories of sightings in the corridor, stairs and in the garden. The book ‘Apparitions of the dead’ is inspired from the Cheltenham ghost and contains complete details of the hauntings.

Princess theatre, Melbourne

Mat connolley

The princess theatre is a 1488 seat theatre in Melbourne’s East End theatre district, Australia and is the oldest entertainment site there.

The theatre started in 1854 by the name of Astley’s amphitheater. In 1857,the name was changed to princess theatre. Since then it has been owned by multiple people and has been torn down and rebuilt multiple times. The last extensive renovation was in 1986,when David Mariner purchased the theatre.

On March 1888, Gounod’s opera “Faust” was being run at the theatre. Frederick baker under the stage name of Frederick federici was performing the role of Mephistopheles. The production was to end with Mephistopheles sinking dramatically through a trap door to signify him returning to the fires of hell with his prize, the unfortunate Dr Faustus. As he was being lowered down to the basement, he had a heart attack and died immediately inside the basement. He couldn’t come to the stage to take his bows and nobody knew about it. When the opera ended, the company came to know about the tragic incident. However, the company and all the stage staff swore that he had been with them during the bows. Nearly everybody on the stage had seen him taking his bows.

This was the first ever sighting of his ghost. Many people have reported of seeing the ghost since then. Sometimes he could be spotted sitting on one of the chairs watching the show. As a sign of respect for many years on opening night a seat would be left for frederici in the dress circle. His ghost was considered as a sign of good luck for the play. Some people have spotted him sitting in the dress circle well dressed, while others have seen him on stage. Some people have witnessed mysterious lights passing through the corridors.
In 1970s during the making of a documentary film, pictures we’re taken. One picture revealed an ashen faced transparent figure. Everybody working at the theatre has experienced some kind of activity at the theatre. They have made peace with it and doesn’t want it to go away.

Wayside inn, longfellow

Daderot/ Wikimedia commons

Wayside inn was built in 1707 in Sudbury, Massachusetts. It was originally built as a house but in 1716 it was partially converted into an inn by the owner. It is one of the oldest inn’s in the United States, so naturally it is considered extremely haunted. The inn was passed down for four generations within the family who made several additions and the name was changed several times.

Bar room

The inn was sold to Henry Ford in 1923 who did several notable renovations which you can see up to this day.

Those who have stayed there, have reported numerous paranormal occurrences. The rooms 9 and 4 are said to be the ones where most of the activity takes place. The spirit of Jerusha Howe (sister of one of the owners) or as people believe it to be, has been sighted by many people. Sometimes inside their rooms, people would feel a strong presence and would see mysterious glows as soon as they would wake up from their sleep. People staying there would sometimes smell a faint perfume smell near the stairway. Sometimes they would feel the touch of an invisible force.

The spirit is an active presence at the inn and since 1900s a ‘secret drawer society’ has been formed by the people. Plain notes are left by the staff members in drawers and several other places so that whenever someone experiences some kind of paranormal activity within the inn, they can write their experience immediately and add it to the inn’s collections. It is believed that Jerusha lived her whole life and died waiting for her beloved, so now even her spirit lingers around the hotel waiting for her love. The inn is now a part of charitable Trust and works both as an inn and a museum.

Boy Scout lane (Wisconsin)

Boy Scout lane is a haunted road in portage county, Wisconsin. The area is a hub of paranormal activity and attracts a lot of paranormal fanatics. The road is known as Boy Scout lane because the area adjoining the road was once owned by the Boy Scouts of America who wanted to build a scout camp there. The land surrounding boy scout lane is now privately owned and is out of limits for the general public.

According to several urban legends, during the 1960s a group of boy Scouts while camping there died mysteriously. Some stories claim that they were murdered by their scoutmaster while others suggest that they were murdered by their bus driver.

According to one version of the legend, all the scouts died when their bus crashed and caught fire, but one of the most famous legend is that all the scouts dissapeared in thin air without any trace except two boy scouts who escaped and got lost in the forest eventually dying of starvation.

It is believed that the ghosts of the boy scouts haunt the road and the forest surrounding it. People can hear them hiking through the woods or their lights can be seen at night as they seek help for their fellow scouts. Stories started circulating about visitors reportedly hearing the sound of footsteps, a strong feeling of bring watched, breaking branches from multiple directions, sightings of red or white lights bearing resemblance to swinging lanterns, ghostly buses or figures and childlike handprints on cars passing from there. A family was passing from there and saw what looked like a face on the window of their car, they sped up the car and moved out of there quickly. The road is considered to be one of the most haunted roads attracting paranormal investigators.

According to some people there are no records of any such deaths in the area and everything is just a hoax. But the truth is that the stories still persist and people keep on visiting the place in the hopes of catching some kind of paranormal activity.
