Daksa Island, Croatia

Dubrovnik is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. It was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites because of its old architecture that was beautifully preserved. Despite being one of the most prominent destinations just 1.5 nautical miles away from the city lies an island called Daksa.

Daksa is uninhabited and locals mostly stay away from the island. They believe that the island is haunted and for a good reason too.

During 1944, soon after WW2 there was widespread distrust between the people. The Nazi state was taken down but the ideology was still prevalent. People were hiding to protect themselves. Mainly in Europe people were being tried on suspicion of being Nazi collaborators. Many people were imprisoned and killed. However, this led to even the innocents being wrongly accused.

Dennis Jarvis

According to the reports, on Oct 18, 1944 Partisan forces entered the city of Dubrovnik and started rounding people whom they suspected of assisting the Nazis in some way or other. The true number is not exactly known but it is believed that they rounded about 300 people. From those people they singled out around 35-40 people and took them to the Daksa Island and killed them without any trial. Among those people was the mayor of the city and the priest. People were warned that if they try to go and find their family members on the island, they would meet the same fate. So for the next 50-60 years the bodies of these people were left on the island.

Dennis Jarvis ( Daksa lighthouse)

In 2009, the remains of 6 people were discovered by someone and they informed the authorities who did extensive research and found the remains of forty-eight more people. The number of bodies found is still highly debatable as it is now believed that more than 35 people were massacred because many more remains have been found. The bodies were given a proper burial in 2010.

The island has an eerie atmosphere with locals avoiding the island and warning others to do the same thing. People who have visited the island feel that the island radiates the negativity of the bad things that happened there. Most of those who visit the island are travellers who want to explore the place. The paranormal experiences are relatively few as people rarely visit the island. People have visited the island on small ships or big boats. The crew of the ship always try to stay far from the island. Locals always warn others to not go on the island because they believe its cursed and angry spirits roam the island. They have allegedly heard terrible moans and screams from the island. A person who visited the island found scratch marks on their back while exploring the place.

The island is up for sale for around two million euros but nobody has shown any interest in buying the island and it is widely believed that it’s the angry spirits that are stopping the sale of the island.

Eastern state penitentiary (Pennsylvania)

The eastern state penitentiary, also known as ESP is a former American prison in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The prison opened in 1825 and became the first in the U.S. to implement solitary confinement, a hotly debated practise during that time. Prisoners lived in gloomy rooms with virtually no human contact, hoods placed over their heads anytime they were moved.

The system was opposed by the people as they preferred a system where prisoners could work together in silence. The solitary confinement system eventually collapsed due to overcrowding. It was then operated as a congregate prison till 1970 when it was officially closed. In the 19th century the prison became one of the largest tourist destinations where the visitors could talk to inmates so that they do not feel isolated. It is believed that due to isolation the prisoners were driven insane. The punishments used were also very harsh. The prisoners were dipped and dunked in water bath and hung on a wall during winters till the ice formed on their skin. The mad chair, which bound the inmates so tightly that circulation was cut off and then there was the ” Hole ” a dark underground where there was no light, no human contact, no exercise and very little food.

The prison is considered to be one the most haunted places. Dozens of paranormal investigators visit every year and report multifarious paranormal activity. The places with most activity include cellblock 12 known for echoing whispers, cellblock 6 and 4 for shadowy figures darting of the walls and ghostly faces. Many people have claimed of seeing a silhouette of a guard. One of the most legendary tales comes from Gary Johnson, who helps maintain the crumbling old locks at the prison. In the early 1990s, he opened an old lock in cellblock 4 when a force gripped him so tightly he was unable to move and he saw tormented faces appear on the walls. The prison is now being run as a museum and haunted attraction. These stories may or may not be true but the chilling past of the prison, inhumane attitude toward the prisoners and the sinister atmosphere do make a solid case.

The apparition at newby church(the Spectre of newby church) –

The church of Christ the Consoler on the grounds of newby Hall, New Yorkshire, UK has never had any history of the paranormal. In 1963 Reverend Kenneth F lord took a photograph in the church, a figure appeared on the photograph resembling a man but somehow distorted. Kenneth Lord claimed that there was no one with him when he took the photograph. He also swore about its legitimacy and grew extremely frustrated when people accused him of faking it somehow.
People who believed the photograph to be legit evidence of the paranormal conclude that it resembles a 16th century monk with white shroud around its face. Some say it could be above 9 feet tall while others think that as we can’t see it’s feet, it must be standing on something.

The Reverend K. F. Lord’s photograph

A lot of people believe this to be a hoax and suggest it to be a clever use of double exposure, however it has been checked several times by photography experts and they all agree that there is no double exposure on the photograph. Some people still suggest that this apparition might be a trick of light or it might be an accomplice in a costume as the figure looks too clear.
More than 55 years have passed since the photograph was taken but it still turns out to be one of the most mysterious and controversial pieces of evidence of the existence of the paranormal.

The Cheltenham Ghost (Real woman in Black? )

The morton ghost later known as the cheltenham ghost was an apparition said to haunt a house in cheltenham, Western England.

The sightings started occurring during 1882 in the Despard family, who lived there at that time. The daughter was first to encounter the spirit. She had heard someone at the door, when she went to check, she found nobody there. While returning she saw the figure of a tall lady dressed in black, standing at the top of the stairs. The figure began to descend the stairs but vanished in thin air.

Most of the sightings occurred between 1882 and 1886 after which the sightings became uncommon. At the time when the sightings were frequent at least seven people saw the apparition while many others heard unexplainable noises.

The eldest daughter “Rose” saw the figure many times and described it in detail in her diary. Other sisters also saw the apparition but at different times and only when they were alone. The ghost would never show up in front of more than one person at a time. Once all four sisters saw the figure in quick succession separately on the route from the drawing room to the orchard. The father could never see the apparition even if it was standing beside him. In total 17 people saw the apparition and each and everyone of them claimed that they mistook it for a living person as it was not like a transparent figure but a solid lifelike being.

Thales Rodrigues de Miranda

The society for physical research investigation did a research about the history if the house and found out that the ghost was a housewife that used to live there in 1860. Nobody knows what happened to her and she became an apparition. Years later the house was turned into a boarding school and there were stories of sightings in the corridor, stairs and in the garden. The book ‘Apparitions of the dead’ is inspired from the Cheltenham ghost and contains complete details of the hauntings.

The princess theatre is a 1488 seat theatre in Melbourne’s East End theatre district, Australia and is the oldest entertainment site there.

The theatre started in 1854 by the name of Astley’s amphitheater. In 1857,the name was changed to princess theatre. Since then it has been owned by multiple people and has been torn down and rebuilt multiple times. The last extensive renovation was in 1986,when David Mariner purchased the theatre.

On March 1888, Gounod’s opera “Faust” was being run at the theatre. Frederick baker under the stage name of Frederick federici was performing the role of Mephistopheles. The production was to end with Mephistopheles sinking dramatically through a trap door to signify him returning to the fires of hell with his prize, the unfortunate Dr Faustus. As he was being lowered down to the basement, he had a heart attack and died immediately inside the basement. He couldn’t come to the stage to take his bows and nobody knew about it. When the opera ended, the company came to know about the tragic incident. However, the company and all the stage staff swore that he had been with them during the bows. Nearly everybody on the stage had seen him taking his bows.

In 1970s during the making of a documentary film, pictures we’re taken. One picture revealed an ashen faced transparent figure. Everybody working at the theatre has experienced some kind of activity at the theatre. They have made peace with it and doesn’t want it to go away.

Wayside inn, longfellow

Daderot/ Wikimedia commons

Wayside inn was built in 1707 in Sudbury, Massachusetts. It was originally built as a house but in 1716 it was partially converted into an inn by the owner. It is one of the oldest inn’s in the United States, so naturally it is considered extremely haunted. The inn was passed down for four generations within the family who made several additions and the name was changed several times.

Bar room

The inn was sold to Henry Ford in 1923 who did several notable renovations which you can see up to this day.

Those who have stayed there, have reported numerous paranormal occurrences. The rooms 9 and 4 are said to be the ones where most of the activity takes place. The spirit of Jerusha Howe (sister of one of the owners) or as people believe it to be, has been sighted by many people. Sometimes inside their rooms, people would feel a strong presence and would see mysterious glows as soon as they would wake up from their sleep. People staying there would sometimes smell a faint perfume smell near the stairway. Sometimes they would feel the touch of an invisible force.

The spirit is an active presence at the inn and since 1900s a ‘secret drawer society’ has been formed by the people. Plain notes are left by the staff members in drawers and several other places so that whenever someone experiences some kind of paranormal activity within the inn, they can write their experience immediately and add it to the inn’s collections. It is believed that Jerusha lived her whole life and died waiting for her beloved, so now even her spirit lingers around the hotel waiting for her love. The inn is now a part of charitable Trust and works both as an inn and a museum.

Alcatraz Island

Alcatraz island is located near the san fransisco bay, San Fransisco, California. The island was named “La Isla de los Alcatraces” ( island of the pelicans) by a Spanish explorer Juan Manuel de Ayala in 1775.

Mike lee

In the 1950s the island was reserved for military use due to its safe location and the army built a fortress and installed cannons to protect the San Fransisco bay, several weapons were kept there for safe keeping. By the late 1950s the island started housing war criminals or military prisoners. As the island was isolated from the mainland by the strong cold waters of the bay, it was an ideal location to hold the prisoners as nobody would dare run away from the prison and if the prisoners would try to run away it’s very unlikely that they can swim through the cold and strong currents of the bay.

Alcatraz basement @TheeCakee

It was converted to federal prison in 1934 and during its operation housed some of the most dangerous inmates most notably “Al Capone” and “Robert Stroud”. A maximum security facility was opened and the prisoners were subjected to adverse living conditions with little to no benefits. The cells were really small and the inmates were sometimes not even let out of prison for more than a week. Many prisoners committed suicide or were killed by other inmates. People who tried to run away would either be captured, shot dead or would drown. Inmates were subjected to a lot of torture.

Alcatraz was shut down in 1963 after 29 years of operating as a federal prison because of the high operating costs and the buildings were deteriorating faster because of the salty sea water. It now operates as one of the most famous tourist attractions in San Fransisco and a lot of tourists visit the island. Due to its brutal history the island is considered to be one of the most haunted locations in the world.

istolethetv/ Wikimediacommons

Tourists have seen or heard things on the island that can only be attributed to the supernatural. Even when the prison was in operation the guards would often witness paranormal activity. The inmates who were not able to flee the island during their life were doomed on the island even after their deaths and the island became a hub of tortured and broken souls. People visiting there have heard unexplainable sounds, cell doors closing or crashing, footsteps and even unearthly screams. There is always an intense feeling of being watched and as there is a lot of negative energy people can sometimes feel this energy and will sometimes have to leave a certain area as they are not able to withstand that energy and they would feel that it’s choking them. Paranormal investigators often visit the island and they are overwhelmed by the mysterious activity and energy on the island.

Some of the most haunted locations are the hospital, the laundry room and cell block c, however the most haunted among these haunted locations is the D cell block also known as the solitary confinement. People who go there can often feel the air becoming thick around them and can feel the vibrations in their body. It is as if they are not alone and surrounded by a group that they cannot see. Rangers who have to look after the island refuse to go inside the solitary confinement alone.

Alcatraz outside area @Bigmacthealmanac

According to one guard who was at the prison during its operation, one inmate was sent to solitary confinement, within a few minutes the man started screaming that a tall figure with ghostly eyes was attacking him. The guards thought of these as desperate cries in order to get out of solitary confinement. However, the Screaming carried on throughout the night and suddenly there was a complete silence. In the morning he was found strangled to death. People believed that he was killed by an evil spirit and the mystery continued to the next day when the guards counting the inmates counted more people than the total number of inmates present. Everyone was stunned but the figure that the guard had counted vanished in thin air.

People who visited the island have heard constant whispering, footsteps, foul smell, moaning and even saw a figure with glowing eyes from far away. Some people have even reported being touched when they have trying to sit inside a cell alone. The island is shrouded with mystery but it still remains one of the most visited public attractions around San Fransisco.

Solitary confinement also known as the hole.
