Randolph County infirmary- Winchester, Indiana

Randolph County infirmary was formerly known as county asylum.

OfficialRandolphCountyAsylumInfirmary

The place where the infirmary is built belonged to a farmer and his wife during the 1800s. They used to house people who did not want to live alone in exchange for some money from the state. Later when the property was acquired by the state, the first infirmary was built in 1851. Unfortunately after only two years from its construction, there was a fire destroying the building and many people lost their lives.

OfficialRandolphCountyAsylumInfirmary (1855)

In 1855, another building was built in place of the first one to accommodate the poor and sick. The building operated for the next forty years before being closed down again due to the living conditions being deemed unfit.

Finally in 1899 another building was built which stands till this date. The infirmary provided food and shelter to the poor and needy of the region sponsored by the county. Orphans, physically or mentally disabled people, old men and women who couldn’t provide for themselves were some of the residents of the infirmary. These types of infirmaries were set up in each state and county for the similar purpose. Even during the great depression in the 1930s these infirmaries still provided food and shelter to the people when the federal government had to sponsor these asylums. It was also used to keep tuberculosis patients when the illness spread throughout the USA and there was a need for space to accommodate the patients.

OfficialRandolphCountyAsylumInfirmary

The Randolph County infirmary closed down in 2009. During the time of its closing down only 5 residents remained at the infirmary.

During the time of its operation there were many reported and unreported deaths at the infirmary. The exact number is not known but the reported deaths are close to 200. Reported deaths include suicide by hanging, tuberculosis deaths, old age deaths and a patient died after being pushed from the second floor window.

With so many reports of death and suicides one might easily guess that many of those who died with some unfinished business may not want to leave the place. In fact the infirmary is said to be one of the most active places in terms of paranormal. The most common activities include the doors slamming on their own, sounds of children giggling and running up and down the stairs, female whispering and sounds of women screaming. People have even witnessed shadow figures multiple times in the attic as well as the basement. So far there has not been any violent paranormal activity except for one person being scratched on the neck.

The building now hosts paranormal tours and events. The infirmary is mostly booked with visitors leaving pleased with their paranormal experiences.

On Google reviews people have described the place as one of the most haunted places in the world having experienced plenty of paranormal activities and most of them have explored the place multiple times. Those who want to explore the place or even stay overnight can do so by booking the place.

The Ghost of Hoa Family, Vietnam

Hui bon hoa was moved to Saigon from China in search of work. He started working in a pawn shop and learnt French so that he can build better business relations with the French. He started his own real estate business and soon became one of the biggest and wealthiest merchants in the area. He had three sons who came back to help his father in the business and a daughter named Lan whom he loved and treasured.

Marufish

Unfortunately, the daughter contracted leprosy which had no cure at that time. The disease can spread easily and the patient has to be isolated. The disease was considered more of a curse by the people at that time and due to the Hoa’s family influence and social status they could not let society get wind of this. As a result the daughter was kept locked in a private room and the maids went there day and night to give her food. The Hoa family even prepared a fake funeral for her daughter and it was told that she died from an illness so that nobody says anything about her missing from the social gatherings. The daughter used to cry from loneliness and people used to hear her cry thinking that it was the ghost of the dead daughter.

Bùi Thụy Đào Nguyên

The daughter was ultimately driven to insanity because of the loneliness and she committed suicide. Hui bon hoa was devastated but he couldn’t bury her daughter outside now, so he made a cement coffin inside the room and was buried there. Due to his love for the daughter he couldn’t come to the terms with her death and still had the maids bring her food everyday.

On the one year anniversary of her death the maids saw something terrifying. When they came to pick up the rice plates, they saw that the rice was half eaten and the daughter was sitting on top of the coffin. She screamed and ran to get others. The family came and witnessed the whole event with their own eyes. Later the daughter was buried outside privately. Since that time, the daughter has been said to roam the halls of the house. People even saw shadows moving in the windows and heard the crying of a girl.

The house has now been converted into the Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts museum. People visit the place to know more about historical events and facts but they leave with more than just historical facts.

Hotel del Salto, Colombia

ArturoAparicio

Hotel del Salto is located near Tequendama Falls in Bogotá, Colombia. The city was ruled by Muisca people. When the Spanish landed in south America, they started murdering and enslaving the Muisca people. To escape this date people started jumping off the edge of Tequendama Falls. Hundreds of people committed suicide during that time. Normally people try to avoid a place with such a haunting past.

Felipe Restrepo Acosta

In 1923, architect Carlos Arturo Tapias built his home near the falls. The mansion was so big and spacious yet he was alone with nobody to share the space. Eventually the horrors of the place started getting to him and he realised that it would be better to invite paid guests inside the house. Many influential people and celebrities started frequenting the mansion and many big parties were hosted on a regular basis. After sometime the mansion was converted into a hotel and the parties kept on going. In 1928, due to the great depression businesses fell and many people were moved to bankruptcy. The tourism industry affected the most as people would not go on any sort of vacation.

Felipe Restrepo Acosta

History repeated itself and locals started to jump off the falls during the period where they had no money and were forced into starvation. The number of guests at the hotel started to fall and those who still came to the hotel had to assist in investigations because people committed suicide near the hotel. The period was the start of the descent of the hotel and it didn’t reach its initial success again but many people still frequented the hotel. In 1990 the hotel closed down because of the decay caused by the moisture. In 2013 the government started renovations at the hotel to reopen it as a museum. People still visit the museum to know more about the history.

Harrysaurio

The hotel and the area surrounding it has a brutal history and due to a lot of deaths in the area, the atmosphere around the place always looks grim. When the hotel was abandoned, many homeless people squatted there, and there were accounts of people being scared by shadows that they could see from the corner of their eyes. Many people were also found dead inside the hotel during that time. It is said that the homeless people were lured there by paranormal forces and died inside the hotel. The abandoned hotel attracted a lot of paranormal investigators and these investigators captured a lot of evidence. At that time the hotel was completely taken over by nature from inside out with vines and moss covering the hotel beds and furniture. It is also believed that the site was cursed by Muisca people because their land was forcibly taken and they were slaughtered and driven to suicide. Even when the hotel was in operation, the guests would have a hard time sleeping as they would often see apparitions and hear whispers even when nobody was around. Sometimes people would even hear screaming from inside the hotel making them visibly shaken. The hotel has now been converted into a museum and a cultural site. Tours of the hotel are also provided to the curious visitors.

Mystery of the chase vaults

Chase vault is located in Christ Church parish church in Oistins, Christchurch, Barbados. The place is best known for a mysterious legend of the moving coffins. According to the legend, each time the vault was opened, all the coffins would have changed their positions. The vault was a heavily sealed one and whoever had to go inside the vault had to remove a huge marble slab in order to get inside. The Chase family bought the vault in the 1800s, soon after 3 family members died in quick succession from one another. Thomas chase, the man of the family also committed suicide and was buried there. After that whenever the vault was opened for another burial or maintenance, the coffins despite being really heavy were found scattered around as if they were thrown away by someone from their original place. The family believed it to be the work of vandals, however no footprints or any other signs of break in were ever found. The coffins would then be moved to their original positions, but the same thing would happen every time the vault would be reopened. The legend spread all around the town like wildfire. People began talking about the reason for this mysterious activity. The most famous and widely believed explanation was that a curse has been put on the family using black magic.

The house of faces

The Belmez faces is a mysterious paranormal phenomenon that started occurring in a private house in Spain.

In 1971, the pereira family started discovering images that looked like faces on the walls of their house. The mistress of the house first saw a face appearing on the kitchen floor. Her husband and son destroyed the floor with an axe but another face appearing on the floor. Family members demolished and reconstructed the floor but the faces kept on appearing in different parts of the house.

The news about these incidents reached the mayor of the town and he ordered several investigations one of which involved cutting out the wall where the face appeared and sending it for testing.

The news spread all over the country and many tourists as well as news reporters started to gather around the family home to witness the mysterious activity themselves.

Many faces have appeared and vanished since 1971 and some of them have even been photographed. Paranormal investigators believe that these images are of the dead. The house became a place of tourist attraction as hundreds of people started to visit the house.

According to a local legend, many skeletons were under the ground near that home. The floors of the house have also been rebuilt several times but the faces keep on appearing. Many investigations have taken place since then but none of them have led to a rational conclusion. People believe this to be the work of spirits while many other consider it a hoax but that’s how all the urban legends and paranormal mysteries are. Right?

Native Americans of Reddit describe their tribes ghost stories, legends, or supernatural occurrences

I’m Ts’mshian and we seem to have a lot of shapeshifters which some are uhh…. Questionable.

I think a lot of them are similar to the idea of skinwalkers, but some of the shapeshifters (like raven) have been a huge part of getting the things we need like the moon and stars (although mostly through… trickery). I’ve known some people who swear they’ve come into contact with shapeshifters that usually end up being like a mimic of someone they know (usually somekne with them) but are often faceless. There was apparently a ghost war once. Mosquitoes were once a bloodthirsty group of people.

Uktena. It’s a legend about a horned snake in Tsalagi (Cherokee) legend. Uktena is said to be very large and round like a tree trunk, with horns on his head. The only way to wound him is to shoot at a singular spot on his forehead that emits bright light. It’s similar to a diamond. If you defeat Uktena, you become a miracle worker. A great warrior. Yet, once you see the light of his forehead, you run toward it instead of trying to escape. Even to see Uktena sleeping is death. Not to the hunter, but to his family.

The Raven Mocker was our version of the bogeyman. The most feared of the Cherokee witches, they prey on the sick and dying. They eat the heart of their victim and add years to their life for every year their victim would have lived.

‘The flame walker.

Spirits who take the form of a small blue flame, that leads people into the swamps and bogs, where they eventually drown or otherwise vanish. (yes they are basically will-o-wisps)

Another are the ‘Water Faced hunters’ (again rough translation, and i am not heavily involved with my tribe these days).

These creatures have a face that acts like a pool of water, reflecting the face of anyone who looks them in the ‘eyes’. They mercilessly hunt down the people who ‘acknowledge them’. The only way to avoid them is to not speak to, or others interact with a stranger unless you can see their face from the corner of your eye.

We also have the more traditional skinwalker type legends, as well the Bogmen. My Tribe is considered part of the Abenaki, but are actually a smaller ‘sub tribe’ basically when it came down to it, there were not enough of the tribe to actually be considered a tribe anymore. Today we number fewer than 200, and only 8 of those are more than half blooded. My bio father and his brother, as well as my paternal grandparents are the last 4 full blooded of my tribe.

We have a spirit similar in aboriginal culture. Its called a mimi spirit. Basically when you go walk about this spirit (day or night) will try and trick you into following it. It will appear, you walk to it and its vanished. It will appear again, you again follow it for it to disappear. Repeat this multiple times and you are lost forever.

I was 7 when I first actually met an elder whos son was taken by the mimi spirit. Ill never forget her broken face when she told my class.

r/THCInjection

I feel like I may be late but I have a lot of aboriginal myths. Most are old tales that involve magic or giants, taking animals. Cunning ravens, the birth of the Tli Cho people; but more sinister of tales, the Nahga. The aboriginal version of Bigfoot.

I also know of an Inuktitut take about witches that live under the ocean called the Qallipiliuit.

I’m a northern Canadian with an aboriginal father and a white mother. The tales heard where either from teachers, grandparents, or friends who have embraced their culture.

So let me know if you want to hear some stories

r/spanishLION

Dene from northern British Columbia here, my mom used to always tell me stories of the Nehgunni, or bushmen/wild-men when I was young, they were people who lived in the forest and took away people who wandered too far out, specifically children.

I always figured these stories were created by my people to serve two purposes, first to teach young children to not wander far off, and second to give explanations to kidnappings done by other tribes, which was a fairly common occurrence even up until the early to mid 20th century, my grandmothers brother was taken by Cree from Alberta and raised by them. They had assumed he had died until decades later when they were reunited and learned what had happened.

I’m Cherokee and growing up the Uktena (horned serpent) really freaked me out. The mountain my family lived on has these mysterious glowing lights that according to legend was from the Uktena trying to trick people into finding it. There is also Spearfinger, an old lady who can transform into your loved ones and eat your liver.

r/kalimah1

So the first one is called See-at-co (don’t know the translation in English). Lived at this lake and it’s was his spot, we DO NOT go there or he will kill you. Used to have nightmares about him based on what I was taught as a kid. Like how you could stand at the edge of the water and be looking in and he would come out of it and just grab you.

But then the mountain blew up and filled in the lake so don’t know if he’s still around or not.

The second I don’t remember the name but translated into to English is “dangerous being” who lives in rivers and drowns people. Anthropologists think it was our way of describing dangerous log jams and whirl pools in our river.

Stull cemetery, Kansas

Leah/ Flickr

Stull cemetery is located in Douglas County, Kansas and was built in 1857.

Gatsbydog3/wikimediacommons

The stull cemetery became really famous in 1874 when a student in the university of Kansas printed an article about satan visiting the cemetery twice a year, the cults using the cemetery for performing rituals and a supposed gateway to hell that is concealed within the cemetery. It is also said that during a trip to Colorado in the 1990s, the Pope redirected the flight path of his private plane to avoid flying over the unholy ground of Stull (although there is no evidence that this happened)

People soon started claiming the cemetery as one of the seven gateways to hell. Thrill seekers started visiting the cemetery and they would claim that weird and creepy events such as noises and memory lapses happened to them leading to further speculation that the town was haunted by witches and the devil. Two guys were walking towards the cemetery at night, a strong gush of wind made them scared and they ran towards their car but they could not find the car where they had supposedly parked earlier instead it was found on the other side of the road.

Ayleen Gaspar/Wikimediacommons

Many legends are attributed to the Evangelical Emmanuel Church that stood there from 1857 to 2002. The church became completely dilapidated in the 20th century. The ruins of the church are said to have been used by satanists, cults and witches for performing rituals. It is said that even though the church didn’t have any roof at the time when these cults used to meet, rain could not pour inside the church. There used to be a pine tree beside the church which people believed was used to hang witches. The tree was cut down by the officials to prevent thrill seekers and vandals from entering. However, the number of people visiting the cemetery has not gone down. The graveyard has started to deteriorate because of the vandals. People would jump over the fence to visit the cemetery and they would vandalise everything. Nowadays, the area is patrolled by the county sheriff’s office and those found trespassing are arrested. If caught inside the cemetery after it is closed, a fine of 1000$ could be charged and one might also end up in jail for six months.

Leah/Flickr

Stull cemetery and the legends revolving around it have been popular for a long time. It has also been widely depicted in many movies and tv shows most notably in “Supernatural” where the final confrontation between Lucifer and Michael happened in the season 5 finale.

During 2002, the church inside of the cemetery was torn down although the owners of the property deny giving anyone the authorisation to do this and nearby residents did not even hear the church getting torn down.

This is however not the only haunted place in Kansas as there are many haunted places throughout the state.

Mummies of Guanajuato, Mexico

ReyungCho

During the cholera outbreak of 1833 in Mexico, the demand for more cemeteries and burial places arose. Most of the bodies were buried immediately to contain the spread. At that time a few was charged from people for burying the bodies of their relatives.

In 1865,the city decided to commence exhuming bodies from Santa paula municipal pantheon cemetery niches and crypts if a certain family had failed to pay the fee for 5 years running, because of the shortage of burial places. Dr leroy had no local family to pay the fee so he was to be exhumed to make room for another body. To everyone’s astonishment, his body was found mummified.

Anders Lagerås

More mummies were found all over the cemetery and after some confusion and chaos they were stored in cemetery’s catacombs. It was found out many years later that the climate of Guanajuato provides an environment for natural mummification. People started visiting the cemetery to see the mummies with their own eyes and the cemetery workers started charging them a few pesos. This place was subsequently turned into a museum called el museo de las momias (the museum of mummies) in 1969. Due to the epidemic, the bodies were immediately buried to prevent the spread. In some cases however it is believed that the dying people were buried even before they died resulting in horrofic facial expressions.

ReyungCho

One of the mummies buried alive was Ignacia Aguilar. She suffered from a strange sickness that made her heart stop on several occasions. During one of those occasions her heart stopped beating for more than a day. Her family thought that she had died and buried her. When she was later removed from the place she was buried, her head was facing down, she was biting her arm and there was a lot of blood in her mouth. The museum of mummies contains more than 57 mummies and although the place might not be haunted, it is nonetheless a really creepy place to visit.

Rules of delay

In the world there are several rules of survival. People are taught about these rules since they were kids to prevent any misfortune. But what about the rules that no one teaches you? What about the rules relating to something a lot of people don’t even acknowledge?

Lots of people from different regions have figure out the rules of their region. I have figured out some of these general rules and I call them rules of delay because once you come in contact with these things, you can only delay the inevitable. Some of these rules are

1. Do not look back while walking on an empty road at night, however tempted you are.

2. Do not attach a mirror on the wall opposite of your bed. You don’t want faces peeking at you from the mirror.

3.Do not ever sleep at a place in your room where your are blocking someone’s way.

4. Always sleep with your feet towards your door and your head away from it.

5. If you are home alone trying to sleep and you hear a sound from inside the house, never leave your bed to investigate. Instead cover yourself with blankets.

6. Never try to talk to something you cant see in the darkness, not even as a joke. You will not like it if something replies back.

7.Never react to any sound when alone, it’s only when you acknowledge these sounds then these things come for you.

8. Do not look at the mirror directly at night and if you do, never break eye contact instantly. Look away slowly.

9.Never answer the door if you hear three consistent knocks. Either wait for the fourth or never open the door.

10.Never try to look from in between the cracks of the curtains.

11.Do not panic if you feel somebody’s presence behind you. Try to act normal.

These rules varies from place to place. Nobody has taught you these rules, but you still know about them subconsciously. You follow these rules without realising so and only when someone tells you about these rules than you realise that you already follow them. We don’t know what will happen if we don’t follow these rules, but do we really want to find that out?
